Osteoarthritis is a joint disease that mostly affects cartilage. Cartilage is the slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones in a joint. Healthy cartilage allows bones to glide over each other. It also helps absorb shock of movement. In osteoarthritis, the top layer of cartilage breaks down and wears away. This allows bones under the cartilage to rub together. The rubbing causes pain, swelling, and loss of motion of the joint. Over time, the joint may lose its normal shape. Also, bone spurs may grow on the edges of the joint. Bits of bone or cartilage can break off and float inside the joint space, which causes more pain and damage.

People with osteoarthritis often have joint pain and reduced motion.

The cause of osteoarthritis is unknown. Factors that might cause it include:

  • Being overweight
  • Getting older
  • Joint injury
  • Joints that are not properly formed
  • A genetic defect in joint cartilage
  • Stresses on the joints from certain jobs and playing sports.

How can Stem Cells Help Osteoarthritis?

Currently, Osteoarthritis is treated with exercise, weight control, rest and joint care, and most commonly joint replacement surgery. Some of the medications prescribed can range from Non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs, Acetaminophen and pain medicine.

Despite inducing temporary improvement, these medicines do not address the issue of the damage that has already been done to the joint. Additionally, complete joint replacement surgery is a very invasive therapy within itself.

Because Osteoarthritis is caused by the degradation of the joint’s cartilage, Stem cell therapy directly injected into the joint may be able to differentiate into cartilage cells and result in regenerated joint cartilage.

How are Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC) administered in Osteoarthritis?

A typical treatment is as following; stem cells are administered by a license physician.

Medical evaluation, blood testing, hyperbaric chamber (Day 1)

Intra-articular injection of pre-diferentiated MSC plus PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) for support in the affected joint (Day 2).

Which Kinds of cells are used in Osteoarthritis and how are they obtained?

Adult stem cells are obtained from itc bank from donor tissue or autologous transplant, which is harvested from the patient’s own adipose tissue and it takes 21 days to culture, differentiate and administer the adult stem cells to the patient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find the answers to many commonly asked questions regarding stem cell sources, collection, implantation and other general questions regarding stem cell therapy at the Cabo Stem Cell.

If you do not find the answer to your questions here or elsewhere on our web site, please feel free to contact us today. We’ll be happy to answer them prompty!

Am I Eligible for Treatment?

You are eligible as long as you have a preapproved illness or physical condition where stem cells have proved to be a clinical benefit in research.

What are stem cells?

Stem cells are cells that have the potential to develop into some or many different cell types in the body, depending on whether they are multipotent or pluripotent. Serving as a sort of repair system, they can theoretically divide without limit to replenish other cells for as long as the person or animal is still alive. When a stem cell divides, each «daughter» cell has the potential to either remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell, or a brain cell.

What classes of stem cells are there?

1) Embryonic stem cells. Mexico does not approve clinical trials with this type of cells because it has ethical and religious implications.

2) Adult stem cells: in Mexico the only ways to do cell therapy consist in use of autologous and allogenic cells.

Allogenic cells: this type of cell came from a donator patient that they were in a meticulous protocol of selection like particular age, not family history of cancer or chronic degenerative disease, also not personal history of alcohol, drugs and tobacco users. In general we select healthy, young and sporty donators.

Autologous: that came from our own body; stem cells are extracted of fat tissue. This type of tissue is rich in the quantity and quality of stem cells. 1 gram of fat tissue contains 500 hundred more stem cells than 1 gram of bone marrow.

Clinical trials demonstrate that stem cells that came from fat tissue can regenerate new tissues and also can remove pathological immune response like in autoimmune diseases.

Which pathologies or conditions can be treated?

-Anti – aging therapy.

-Alzheimer´s disease.

-Autoimmune Hepatitis.

-Mellitus Diabetes.

-Post – Stroke Conditions..

-Systemic Lupus Erithem atosus.

-Sport Injuries.

-Multiple Sclerosis.

-Macular Degeneration.

-Parkinson disease.

-Hematological disease.

-Heart Attack.

-Ocular disease.

How stem cells heal?

One of the fundamental characteristic of stem cells is that doesn’t need be implant in the specific damage organ, this cells can found the ways to heal automatically the tissue that really need it. Stem cell have their own radar o internal intelligence this process can be named homing.

Regenerative Medicine is one of the most medical advances that we have in medicine.

In short words: Essentially, stem cells are progenitor cells which are capable of regeneration and differentiation into a wide range of specialized cell types. Once injected, stem cells follow inflammatory signals from damaged tissues and have multiple ways of repairing these damaged areas.

What are the administration ways of stem cells?

Intravenous access

The most secure and simple administration way. This access doesn’t need anesthesia, we can use it if we determinate it’s going to be necessary. All process can take 2 or 3 hours.

We realize this access with local anesthesia performed by a Certified Anesthesiologist, usually indicated for treat column injuries or neurological conditions. Intraarticular (inside the joint) Used for repair tendons and ligaments tears or patients with arthritis. Stem cells are injected directly in the joint or tendon by specialty doctor supported with an ultrasound.

When results are detected in the patient?

Each body is too different of the rest, so it’s not possible guarantee immediately results after cell therapy. A lot of our patients can detect positive changes in the first days after the treatment or until 1 or 3 months later.

How do I apply to become a patient?
